New private hospital proposed for Melbourne’s south-eastern suburbs

TAFE provider Holmesglen and private health company Healthscope are proposing to build a new private hospital in Melbourne’s south-eastern suburbs.

Holmesglen will contribute $20 million to the project and Healthscope will spend $100 million. The hospital is expected to create 500 construction jobs and 750 healthcare roles. The hospital will be built on the existing conference centre at Holmesglen’s Moorabbin campus. Holmesglen chief executive Bruce Mackenzie says the hospital will create construction jobs and training opportunities for students. “It will provide clinical places, not only at this hospital, but right through the Healthscope network right throughout Australia,” he said. “We’ve got the only nursing degree in TAFE in Australia so it’s a huge benefit for us. “It’s really going to strengthen our health science provision here at Holmesglen.” The Holmesglen Private Hospital will include a 150-bed hospital with operating theatres, a pharmacy and a retail café. Students will be able to work at the hospital on clinical placements to further their training.

Healthscope cuts NSW staff and centres as part of restructure

Healthscope Ltd has admitted that the restructure of its New South Wales and Australian Capital Territory operations has led to the closure of 44 of its pathology collection centres in the past month, according to The Australian Financial Review.

Healthscope chief executive Robert Cooke told the newspaper that the closures had come at the cost of 70 jobs.

“We have restructured our NSW business over the last eight weeks and we have closed collection centres and made a number of staff redundant,” he said.
